My concerns (and this is really strange) is that our economic situation may level out a bit. Entering his term, the Biden economy was beginning to flow at a manageable clip.(Then "he" went all bonkers with tariffs, which may now be reeled in!) I've noticed gas prices have decreased in my area. The point being, that folks will become complacent and think "it's not that bad." And then the demonization of progressive, critical thought really begins. This could make it very ripe for full-blown authoritarianism.
Yes, exactly so! You’re a wise man W.J. That definitely could happen, and it’s a dangerous dynamic to watch for. If things feel like they’re stabilising — especially economically —people will most probably relax, stop paying attention, and start telling themselves it’s not as bad as it seemed. That’s when deeper shifts can take hold quietly. If dissent is rebranded as extremism, and critical thought becomes something to be feared/ to punish, authoritarianism doesn’t need to kick the door in — it will just walk through it.
Lori, I appreciate your sharing this important, if frightening, information. The temperature is rising, and we frogs are mostly not nearly alarmed enough. Or like me, we haven't the energy, health status, or financial means to get out. I'm going to urge some trans family members to seriously look at getting out. Thanks for your knowledge and your honesty.
Given what I'm seeing, I think that would be wise counsel.
Beyond that, all I can think to say is 'I'm sorry'. I wish there was more I could do, but I hope that giving you this 'early warning system' through my writing helps keep you safe.
Thank you Morf, both for your kind offer and for showing up here. I read a number of your posts last night and you write so beautifully that I thought I’d share my favourite here, for anyone else who might like to read it.
That’s completely understandable Morf — what’s unfolding is so incongruous with how we perceive the US, that it’s difficult to process. Then, when we due process the reality, it is overwhelming.
I’ve shared some science-backed tools to help you tackle overwhelm, clear your head, and stay grounded through this. I used them to help me navigate the collapse of Zimbabwe, when I lived there. Most of these are still free to read — just go the ‘Resilience’ section of my homepage, and you’ll find them.
Or take the ferry from Seattle to Victoria. If you must bring your vehicle, then take the Port Angelese ferry to Victoria. There is a pretty quick train from Seattle to Vancouver where you can connect with the Canadian through the Rockies.
You caused me to write to Susan Collins again! See below.
I sent the following letter to my Senator, Collins and also forward it to Senator King:
Dear Senator Collins - I look forward to your response.
I live in Machias, Maine. New Brunswick, Canada, is closer to me than Bangor, Maine. I have a church family there, enjoy Campobello, Frederickton, St. Stephens and St. Andrews as destinations for cultural recreation, special occasions, restaurants and day trips. I used to live in Calais and walked across the bridge just to enjoy the park there and St. Croix river from that side.
This increased border control and militarization is a continuing escalation of the overreach and abuse of powers this administration is harming American values and liberties by, and imposing totalitarianism with. When will you say "enough" to these losses of our national values Senator? Why do we need to live in a police state Senator? Why are we being punished (having our freedoms and rights removed) by a "president" who apparently hates us all? How is this tolerable to you?
I quote below what I want you, Senator Collins, to investigate, oppose and call out as wrong with this administration: "{This border escalation is part of the quiet build-up of a national surveillance infrastructure. It’s important to understand how that infrastructure is expanding. In recent weeks, Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been exposed for building a centralized “master database” that pulls in sensitive personal data from across the federal government—including the IRS, SSA, HHS, and HUD. When CBP’s border powers converge with DOGE’s data ambitions, we’re no longer talking about routine government overreach. We’re looking at the framework for turnkey totalitarianism —a system of control that only needs a leader willing to throw the switch.}"
When are you, my Senator, going to do something to protect your constituents' civil liberties and rights, our border town economies, our real ties to our nearest neighbors? How are you going to stop Trump and DOGE from killing our government, abusing non-Congressionally authorized powers as he forces a totalitarian, anti-American takeover of our Constitutional Democracy down our collective throats? No one voted for a dictator! How can you agree with this Senator? Margaret Chase-Smith did not agree to collective fascism! Why do you?
The window of time for you to actually use your powers to stop Trump's depredations is rapidly closing. He is undermining your authority daily. Please act now.
I look forward to your clear answer to my questions and alarm Senator.
Thank you for putting the pieces together in clear sight Lori.
We saw this firsthand when returning to the US on May 1st. And it was EVERY car—not every fourth car. Two dogs and four agents scrutinized every vehicle including trunk, engine compartment, and opening every door. One vehicle at a time. We were puzzled but assumed they were searching for someone or something specific. It was only several days later that we learned it was being implemented at other locations and used indiscriminately. We’re running out of time.
I suspect — and pray — there is more time than it appears. I suspect that this is the scaffolding to support the main event, which will be the rewriting of the constitution through an Article V convention. Why? Because Trump wants to do this — ‘this’ being build their white supremacist, Christian nationalist authoritarian state — legitimately.
Educating others about the danger of an Article V convention is where everyone’s time and attention needs to go. Because if they get those last 6 states, there will be no coming back from this.
Lori, I'm curious - what brought these machinations to you attention? Useful that you're signalling these changes. The Canadian government has already issued some gentle warnings. More important, the LGBTQ community here is being watchful and have recommended people not risk crossing the border.
Of course, Judith. I've always tried to look beyond what's happening, to try to figure out why it's happening. I read extensively, and having lived under Mugabe's regime, I'm especially interested in understanding the routes other authoritarian regimes have taken to power. Often while I sleep, my subconscious flags things I need to pay attention to (though not this time), and then I'll use modelling. I’ve already input the data on various authoritarian leaders Trump openly admires, and the steps they took to consolidate power. So I map that against what’s currently unfolding. On that basis, I project what’s most likely to happen next.
(Sometimes I don’t model, because what’s unfolding feels so self-evident, I assume others must see it too. And then I realise they don’t, and that my brain just works a little differently. So I write what I ‘know’.)
I’m very glad to hear the LGBTQ community in Canada is being watchful. Border crossings have always been a site of vulnerability, but especially now, when identity itself can be treated as a pretext for surveillance or exclusion. Their caution is not only wise, but necessary.
The border that checks who is leaving is already authoritarian. It is only half a step away from being the wall between East and West Germany, where they prevented East Germans from leaving. Let that sink in...we are becoming the very thing we abhored, a closed repressed population, not a free society.
I actually visited East Berlin once, age 18, while the Wall was still up. What struck me most wasn’t the surveillance or the soldiers. It was the one-way nature of the border, when I took free travel for granted.
So when I see the U.S. quietly shifting toward outbound checks, data collection, and movement tracking, it hits differently. We’ve told ourselves for so long that repression looks like tanks in the street or censorship on the page. But often, it starts with infrastructure — quiet, legal, and just uncomfortable enough to make people think twice before they move, speak, or reach out.
You’re right. We’re starting to resemble the very systems we once condemned. And unless more people let that sink in, as you’ve said, we may not recognise the closing of that door until it’s locked behind us.
The land is not being sold. It is being conscripted.
VI. The Border That Moves
There was a time when “the border” was a line. It ran along the southern edge of Texas, Arizona, and California. It was visible—crossed, argued over, contested. But in the world of Project Homecoming, the border no longer marks the edge of a nation. It is a moving perimeter—elastic, unaccountable, and increasingly inside.
Building on lesser-known precedents from the prior administration, the Trump regime has begun reactivating and expanding pre-border inspection zones in several northern states—most notably Washington and Michigan. These are not situated at the border itself, but appear miles inland, intercepting outbound travelers before they ever reach Canadian checkpoints. Some of these operations materialize with little public announcement. Witnesses report surprise stops, probing questions about citizenship, and demands for identification—even for American citizens traveling domestically.
Simultaneously, a deeper incursion has begun in the American southwest. While CBP has long claimed authority to operate within a 100-mile zone from the national border, the current regime has pushed that perimeter further. New internal checkpoints have now been documented 30 to 50 miles beyond prior precedents, particularly in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. These are not symbolic placements—they are active enforcement nodes, pulling over vehicles, demanding papers, and detaining individuals under vague language tied to “homeland integrity.”
Together, these operations point toward a single reality: the creation of a floating domestic perimeter—a shifting enforcement zone in which federal authorities operate without warrants, without probable cause, and increasingly without oversight.
In the logic of Project 2025, this becomes the prototype for something far more expansive:
A nationwide corridor of movement control, where freedom of travel is no longer presumed but granted.
A chokepoint architecture, woven into roadways, airports, and train routes, where federal access merges with biometric surveillance.
A domesticated border state, in which all persons—regardless of citizenship—are subject to algorithmic suspicion and real-time enforcement.
This is not about immigration. It is about territorial control. About dissolving the concept of “interior,” and replacing it with a total perimeter—geographic, digital, and psychological.
The border has not been secured. It has been turned inward.
VII. The Long War: Territorial Annexation, Resource Camps, and the Hidden Conflict to Come
I ordered some flower and vegetable seeds from a Canadian company recently, and a few days later the company wrote to say customers were telling them the seeds they had ordered had been confiscated by customs, and they were getting empty packages, and did I want to cancel my order? Of course, I did. But WTF?
I agree with everything you've said, Lori, but I also think there is an economic element to all of this. As you know, over the past 4 months, 35% to 50% fewer Canadians are visiting the US (by air and passenger vehicle traffic respectively). This is having an obvious significant negative impact on the US tourist industry. There is also a reduction in US travellers to Canada, but it's not nearly as significant. By delaying Americans entry into Canada, and adding the stress of US Customs inspections on the way into our Country, the negative economic impact is likely to be more balanced in the long run, as word gets out. The end result, in addition to the points you've raised, is economic retribution.
I completely agree Simon, and I really appreciate you raising this.
There’s absolutely an economic dimension here, and I think you’re right to frame it as a kind of retribution, whether intentional or not. The numbers are stark, and over just a few months are no small thing, especially for border towns and tourism-dependent businesses. And as you note, while fewer Americans are heading north too, the imbalance is clear.
What’s particularly striking is how the outbound checks don’t just deter Canadians, but make it harder for Americans to leave. That added friction might feel bureaucratic on the surface, but the psychological effect is real. It discourages cross-border flow in both directions, which over time could help mask or soften the perception that the downturn is driven by Canadian resistance to Trump’s policies. Instead, it starts to look like “just one of those things” — until, of course, you step back and see the pattern.
So yes, alongside the political and behavioural goals I flagged, there’s also a clear economic logic to this. If the U.S. is going to take a financial hit from Canadian disengagement, it may well be trying to distribute the pain more evenly — and shift the narrative in the process.
Yes Lori it’s nor decent or acceptable to like these words. So many comparisons that it makes you want to weep except we mustn’t we have to stay strong, alert and focused every god dammed day till this latest evil depravity of a man AND his Wehrmacht are stamped out never to return.
Two thoughts. First, any adult American can reside in Canada for up to 6 months. Best to have an address that you are staying at for the first few nights and a return address in the States. Second, if you are flying home from Canada to the US, don’t forget that the few square metres occupied by US immigration folks are in actual fact US territory and US laws apply, even if the airport is far from the actual border. Don’t be confrontational or rude!
On Interstate 5 at the Blaine crossing in WA State, roadblocks are being set up DAILY for people leaving the US to go to Canada. At some point I expect that the border will be closed completely to citizens leaving the country. This is how Russia operates. They track your travel in and out of the country. CBP can seize your phone and laptop when you come back into the country. Be very cautious about your passport and travel plans. We had hoped to do international travel in 2026 but we won’t now.
Everyone needs to read this both left and right wings! Because not only is this playing out now it will get worse, people are going to die in camps or prisons or just on the street. Our law enforcement will become enemies because they will enforce the regimes orders same with the military, unless they step up and refuse to comply or implement such orders. I’m glad I’m old in one sense as my suffering will be short I will die as a free man. As an American!
My concerns (and this is really strange) is that our economic situation may level out a bit. Entering his term, the Biden economy was beginning to flow at a manageable clip.(Then "he" went all bonkers with tariffs, which may now be reeled in!) I am alarmed that the US side is making border crossing by US citizens leaving and returning to America into a hostile experience. I am also alarmed this appears to be a new US Border COntrol Policy, see article: How The US Border Is Becoming a Tool of Control: Why new US-Canada border checks matter — and what they tell us about where the US is heading, by Lori Corbet Mann, May 13, 2025 on SUBSTACK @ https://loricorbetmann.substack.com/p/breaking-how-the-us-border-is-becoming?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=1xtzp3&triedRedirect=true

Sorry for my omission — a fine example of one of those things I’m not inclined to mention because it feels self-evident.
