There are some additional strategies which can augment the boycott certain Tech approach. With the tariffs hiking prices, the timing is pretty good, right now, for the sort of action recommended here:

Even non-participants in the recent May Day actions feel the price hikes.

OH WOW, I had found this earlier. I was reminded of being on the tarmac in Fairbanks Alaska when the Pope and R. Reagan were there. I had a solidarity sign. I had just gotten into Local 302 International Union of Operating Engineers and was promoting Union Solidarity. The Trans Alaska Pipeline was going on then and through Affirmative Action I worked on the Pipeline. So many memories being 27 yrs old, a woman in the trades. I really need to write about all this. My goal has been to leave no trace but perhaps I can be helpful in writing about what happened to me over the years. I'm 77 now...

Thanks for bringing me back to your Substack!

I wanted to reply to your comment at:

https://robertreich.substack.com/p/this-weeks-neville-chamberlain-award/comments

But I got an "Only paid subscribers can comment" message. You had written:

I doubt there was any 'strong-arming' necessary— Bezos and his tech bros are rubbing their hands all the way to the bank, now Trump is President. Their 'Big Picture' is far greater than what's going on in the US. It's why I'm calling for a global strategic boycott of Big Tech as a way of showing our support for those standing agaisnt the Trump regime.

Thank you. I learned so much from this article. It’s shocking. It explains so much. Our world is being taken over by monsters with big computers.

Keep resisting. We will be heard!

I fully agree that we need to get off of US headquartered tech companies and their products. So do some others.

What an impressive, remarkable post. Thank you for writing it -- & directing me to it. This ... has value.

You're welcome Rebecca. Please may I encourage you to share it? It only has value if it's taken-up, and it will only be taken-up if it has reach — this is a pretty new publication with a small reader base.

What about Substack? Who owns it. How does it track users?

Substack is privately owned. But I can't comment on the partners it might link with, as does almost every major commercial website.

Except the authorities aren't going to use the information to stop people potentially commiting a crime, but to detain/ arrest them.

I was thinking more of the total surveillance, but yeah. I could see the regime starting "preventative detention" though. I need to read up on secret police methods.

It may be why so many of the El Salvadoreans who were rounded-up and deported were not actually gang members. If they kept company with gang members, that could be enough for them to be suspected of potentially causing trouble in the future.

I checked out cryptpad, which claims it's headquarters are in France. But the French government's equivalent of a business registry turned up no results, for them.

Does anyone use them?

Also: Qwant search engine quit working for me, once I posted online that I used it.

Surely the control is more important to them than the $? Especially in the context of so much environmental degradation. I don’t know what their ends are but seems it must be more than monetization.
